In some cases libraries were scattered or destroyed; in other cases books were taken over as state property. This was an epochal change, affecting thousands of libraries and millions of books, and it transformed the shape of libraries and widened access to heritage books. It increased turnover in the book-market, opened a new interest in collecting books, and fostered the growth of public libraries.&nbsp;</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> This conference draws together international scholars to examine, for the first time in comparative perspective, the impact that the secularization of libraries had on the intellectual patrimony of Europe.</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> For registration information and to see the full list of speakers and themes, visit:</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> <a href="http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/csb/MigrationofKnowledge.htm">http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/csb/MigrationofKnowledge.htm</a></p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-event-is-featured"> <div class="field-label">Featured Event:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Not Featured </div> </div> </div> Academic Libraries UK Mon, 03 Oct 2011 14:17:12 +0000 admin 273 at http://lisevents.com Great Lakes E-Summit http://lisevents.com/node/268 <div class="field field-type-text field-field-event-tag-line"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> a regional conference focused on electronic resources </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-event-website"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> http://greatlakese-summit.blogspot.com/p/registration.html </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-event-city"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Dayton </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-date field-field-event-date"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <span class="date-display-start">Oct. 10,</span><span class="date-display-separator"> - </span><span class="date-display-end">Oct. 11, 2011</span> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-event-venu"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Wright State University, Ohio </div> </div> </div> <p>Great Lakes E-Summit</p> <p> Ervin J. The conference will unite librarians, biologists, computer scientists, publishers and students to set the agenda for biodiversity literature digitizing and its networked environment for the next five years.</p> <p> &ldquo;Life and Literature&rdquo; seeks to engage current and future constituencies concerned with biodiversity literature. Sessions will discuss the interoperability of major biodiversity and digital library programs, continued integration of digitized literature within biodiversity databases and publishing models for legacy scientific literature.</p> <p> Guest lecturers include <strong>Richard Pyle and George Dyson</strong>. Pyle, a zoologist at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, is an expert of the taxonomy and biogeography of coral-reef fishes. He has written more than 100 scientific articles and has been featured in several documentary films. Dyson is a scientific historian of technology whose interests include the development of the Aleut kayak (<em>Baidarka, 1986</em>), the evolution of digital computing and telecommunications (<em>Darwin Among the Machines, 1997</em>) and the exploration of space (<em>Project Orion, 2002</em>).</p> <p> Headquartered at the Smithsonian Institution Libraries, the Biodiversity Heritage Library is the literature digitization component of the Encyclopedia of Life, a global effort to document all 1.8 million named species of animals, plants and other forms of life on Earth. BHL is a consortium of 12 major natural history museum libraries, botanical libraries and research institutions. Its goal is to contribute to the global &ldquo;biodiversity commons&rdquo; by digitizing and aggregating the resources housed within each of the participating institutions, providing free and open access to the legacy literature that underpins the work of the natural science community.</p> <p> For more information about the conference, visit <a href="http://www.lifeandliterature.org/">http://www.lifeandliterature.org</a>. It is an <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unconference" target="_blank">unconference</a>, which means that there are no presentations, and all participants work together to form the program. On <strong>Saturday, November 19</strong> in downtown <strong>Atlanta, GA</strong>, the Museum Computer Network is sponsoring <strong>THATCamp MCN</strong>, a free unconference for anyone interested in how new technologies and platforms are changing the landscape of museums.</p> <p> Graduate students in museum studies or related disciplines, museum professionals, and developers are all encouraged to register. Topics for discussion might include everything from managing software projects to uses of social media for museums, and participants are also encouraged to propose coding sessions and co-writing sessions where the emphasis is on doing, not talking. We plan to have a draft program up by <strong>September 1</strong>, but participants can continue to submit session ideas even as the unconference is taking place. There will also be free <a href="http://mcn2011.thatcamp.org/workshops" target="_blank">workshops</a> at THATCamp MCN on technologies such as the Omeka web exhibit builder, and $500 <a href="http://mcn2011.thatcamp.org/fellowships" target="_blank">fellowships</a> are available courtesy of the Kress Foundation to make it possible for early-career museum professionals and students to travel to THATCamp MCN. The fellowship application deadline is <strong>August 1</strong>.</p> <p> This unconference is offered in conjunction with <a href="http://www.mcn.edu/ideas-mcn-2011" target="_blank">the Museum Computer Network conference</a>, but if you are attending the MCN meeting, you must still <a href="http://mcn2011.thatcamp.org/register" target="_blank">register separately</a> for THATCamp MCN. From either point of view, it is clear that libraries and the physical printed word are facing fiscal challenges, revolutionary technological change, and significant cultural transitions. Can libraries co-exist with Google or have we already been replaced? This year&rsquo;s conference theme could hardly be more appropriate, as colleagues struggle to manage the seismic changes that are now confronting our services in both the FE and HE sectors. Once perceived as peripheral to core library services, our collections are now viewed as central. Despite &ndash; or perhaps because of &ndash; this centrality, we face a perfect storm of increasing needs in a time of decreasing support. How can we keep building and providing effective access to collections that will remain central in the future, fulfilling our obligation to provide stewardship of the cultural record?</p> <p> While we continue to collect a multiplicity of formats from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries &ndash; with the attendant issues of physical storage space, preservation, and access &ndash; the twenty-first century offers a new set of evolving challenges. Demographics in the United States and elsewhere are shifting dramatically, and human use of digital technologies is changing what makes up the historical record, in both format and content. How do we capture records of the evanescent &ldquo;now&rdquo; without abandoning the documentation needs of the recent past?</p> <p> Engaging attendees using a variety of session formats, the 2011 Preconference will present current work in the profession, both theoretical and practical, that can be used for modeling possible solutions to such challenges. The spectrum of issues that we will consider includes negotiating collection development for digital collections, collecting across cultural divides, generating buy-in and support from our proliferating audiences, and considering how &ldquo;uniqueness&rdquo; and artifactual value will change in an age of born-digital objects.</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-event-is-featured"> <div class="field-label">Featured Event:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Not Featured </div> </div> </div> United States Academic Libraries Archivists Louisiana Mon, 25 Apr 2011 11:29:14 +0000 admin 183 at http://lisevents.com
